Roaring Brook Nature Center Family Hikes
with the Canton Youth Services Bureau

Join a Roaring Brook Nature Center naturalist for a guided family hike to explore and get to know your local plants and animals. This program is free for Canton residents thanks to the support of the Canton Youth Services Bureau!

Notes About Registrations & Hikes
These hikes have limited spots available! Please make sure you are registering early to secure your spot! If a hike you are interested in attending is full, please go on the wait list. If you have registered for a hike and will not be able to attend, please contact the Canton Parks & Recreation Department as soon as possible so your spot(s) can be filled. The Canton Parks & Recreation Department can be contacted via phone, (860)693-5808, or email at cboughton@townofcantonct.org 

These hikes will include trails and unpaved paths. Please do not bring strollers or wagons on these hikes.

Children under the age of 2 do not need to be registered to attend the program, however we ask that you note their attendance on the prompted questions you will receive when registering.

March: Signs of Spring Hike
Saturday, March 15th at 10:00am
As winter loosens its grip, nature begins to stir! Join us for a family-friendly hike to search for the first signs of spring in Werner's Woods. From budding trees and emerging seedlings to bird songs and animal tracks, we'll explore how nature awakens after the long winter.

This hike will be held at the Roaring Brook Nature Center (70 Gracey Rd, Canton CT).

April: Vernal Pool Expedition
Saturday, April 12th at 10:00am
Springtime brings hidden wonders to the forest - vernal pools! These temporary wetlands are bursting with life, from tadpoles to salamanders. Search for egg masses, listen for calling frogs and learn why these pools are so important for local wildlife. 

This hike will be held at the Ray Smith Trail at the Mary Conklin Sanctuary (Trail head located at 144 Indian Hill Rd, Canton CT). This hike is on a Canton Land Conservation Trust property.

May: The Birds are Back in Town
Saturday, May 17th at 10:00am
Join us for a family-friendly birding hike as we look and listen for our feathered friends and other natural wonders. We'll listen for their songs, learn about their migration patterns and how to identify common species. Whether you're an experienced birder or just getting started, this is a perfect opportunity to connect with nature. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair from us - adventure awaits!

This hike will be held on the Sun, Wind & Woodland Preserve trails with parking in an unpaved lot just north of Breezy Hill Farm (Breezy Hill Rd, Canton CT). This hike is on a Canton Land Conservation Trust property.
